This project leverages Python to visualize the trajectories of New York’s Citibike usage during 2019 and the post-pandemic year of 2022, focusing on different time intervals on weekdays and weekends. The visualization uses blue to mark starting points, yellow for endpoints, and varies the thickness of each route based on frequency, thereby highlighting popular Citibike routes.
Origin Destination Volume Analysis
In 2019, NYC’s Citi Bike stations had equal trip starts and ends, with Midtown and the Villages as travel hotspots, and lower volumes in Brooklyn, Upper Manhattan, and Harlem. By 2022, Midtown emerged as a departure hub, while the Upper East Side and Williamsburg became popular destinations. Brooklyn Heights and parts of Queens maintained balanced use, suggesting residential commuting. Notably, from 2019 to 2022, end trips significantly increased in the Upper East Side, Park Slope, and Queens.
Do Urban Parks Promote Biking?
According to the correlation analysis, the number of bike trips is positively correlated with the number of parks in each zipcode. This suggests that the presence of parks contributes to an increase in bike trips.
